OUR STORY

1424 Conservation Lab Inc. is a start-up corporation established in the Philippines by partners Micaella and Israelex, dedicated to safeguarding the longevity of art and historical artifacts through the application of scientific research, best practices, and sustainable materials and solutions. It leverages on their combined expertise of more than 30 years and shared passion in cultural heritage preservation and information science. Through 1424 Conservation Lab Inc., Micaella and Israelex aspire to contribute to the advancement of conservation practice in the Philippines.

MEET THE CO-FOUNDERS

Micaella Gonzales Veleña

Micaella relocated to Singapore in 2014 to be part of the pioneering team that helped lay the groundwork for the opening of National Gallery Singapore, where she played a key role in the development and preservation of Southeast Asian modern art archives. After ten years, she has moved on from her role as Senior Manager of Library and Archives, and came back to the Philippines to establish 1424 Conservation Lab Inc. with Israelex. As an advocate of conservation, archiving, and librarianship, she has been involved in managing various digitisation and conservation initiatives, training fellow professionals in the field, and establishing community libraries in the Philippines. She graduated with a master’s degree in cultural materials conservation from the University of Melbourne.

Israelex Veleña

Israelex has been actively involved in overseas conservation projects focused on treating artworks by local and international artists. His affiliation with the Society of Filipino Archivists for ten years also allowed him to facilitate several workshops and seminars on material conservation and disaster preparedness and recovery for custodians and professionals from cultural and government institutions across the Philippines. He has also headed a team that is largely involved in collection development and he has been at the helm of establishing an institutional conservation program and laboratory. He graduated with a master’s degree in cultural materials conservation from the University of Melbourne.
